Five Rules for Hiring Reliable Caregivers

5 Apr

DO YOU NEED TO HIRE A CAREGIVER FOR AN AGING FAMILY MEMBER AND WANT PEACE OF MIND TOO?

Consider these tips:

1) If possible, get a referral from someone you know well.

2) Use a reputable agency that will screen candidates for you.

3) Conduct a face-to-face interview to ensure a correct fit for your loved one’s needs and personality.

4) Get more than one reference and check references carefully. Do not rely on written references.

5) Run a police check on anyone you are seriously thinking about hiring.

Ontario’s  Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) is developing a mandatory Personal Support Worker (PSW) Registry for PSWs employed in publicly funded health care facilities. Right now PSW registration is voluntary. There are no plans for it to be a regulatory authority or a complaint body.

Great tips! I’ve heard about people who have had to go through this process so often that they’ve skipped a step – like making phone calls to check written references – with awful results.

Love the plug for MOHLTC! So many people don’t know about the government programs that are available to them.
