ADLs & IADLs

1 Jun

If you have an elderly person in your life, you’re going to hear a lot about ADLs and IADLs.

Basically they are all the things we do for ourselves every day that we take for granted.

ADL = Activity of Daily Living

ADLs include: bathing, showering, dressing, going to the toilet, getting in or out of bed, transferring to or from a seated position, communicating, following instructions,  eating.

IADL = Instrumental Activities of Daily Life

These are slightly more complex tasks that are imperative for independent living. Examples of these would include cooking, cleaning, handling money, taking medication, traveling, or using a telephone or other technology,

As we age, our abilities to perform ADLs become compromised. Some more than others. If someone you care about  needs help with either group, it’s time to start thinking about home care or other living arrangements.

If an older person in your life has trouble with ADLs and/or IADLs, are their needs being met and if so, how?
